Kevin Strickland: 43 Years in Prison for a Crime He Didn’t Commit — And No Compensation

Freedom After 43 Years

In 2021, after decades of advocacy by the Midwest Innocence Project and the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, a judge finally overturned his conviction. Kevin walked free after 43 years behind bars, making it the longest confirmed wrongful conviction in Missouri’s history.

No Compensation From the State

Shockingly, Missouri law denied him any financial compensation because his exoneration did not involve DNA evidence, which is the only basis for state compensation in wrongful conviction cases.

Community Support

In response to this injustice, the Midwest Innocence Project launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised more than $1 million to help Kevin rebuild his life.
